On March 12, Professor Wang-Yuhl Oh from the Department of Mechanical Engineering announced that his research team has developed an improved method for optical imaging of the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of the vessel wall of living animals. Using this new method, the research team successfully acquired high-resolution (with a longitudinal pitch of 34 micrometers (μm) and an axial pitch of 9.2 μm) 3D images of the vessel for the first time in the world.

On March 11, Nobel laureate Sir Paul Nurse gave a special lecture on “The Great Ideas of Biology.” The lecture was held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Fusion Hall of KAIST Institute (KI) Building (E4), and was attended by President Sung Mo Kang and many KAIST students and faculty.

On February 28, the renewed KAIST Portal System began its service. The new portal system was developed to improve its predecessor by reflecting more the needs of KAIST members. Last year, several surveys were conducted for feedback on how the university’s portal system could be ameliorated. Opinions collected included the addition of KAIST shuttle bus timetables, campus map, and menus of the university’s cafeterias, as well as the change in the organization of the webpage to allow easier access to information about KAIST.

On March 10, a new shuttle bus route was introduced, supplanting the hourly shuttle bus route to Wolpyeong (KAIST) Station and back. A 24-passenger minibus was commissioned for this task and is under direct management from KAIST’s administrative departments. The shuttle bus is currently available eight times a day on weekdays. The new shuttle is expected to address the increasing student demand for a consolidated intracity transportation system.

On March 3, KAIST held the 2014 Undergraduate Matriculation Ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Auditorium (E15) of the main campus. This year, over 800 students joined the ranks; they and 700 parents and relatives sat in the audience watching the ceremony commencethe freshman oath, sworn by the two class of 2013 representatives Kwangjun Ahn and Harim Jin.

On March 6, Professor Paul P. Maglio from University of California Merced was invited to hold a seminar, titled “A Service Science Perspective on Big Data and Business Model Evolution,” hosted by the KAIST Department of Knowledge Service Engineering. Professor Maglio focused on the implications of big data from a service science perspective. He is considered to be one of the founders of the service science field.

KAIST doctoral candidate Tae Wan Kim (under the supervision of Professor Kyung Wook Paik) from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is to be awarded the Intel Best Student Paper Award at the Electronic Components and Technology Conference (ECTC) in Florida, United States this May. At the last ECTC event in Las Vegas, United States, Kim presented his research, “Low Temperature Flex-on-Flex Assembly Using Polyvinylidene Flouride Nanofiber Incorporated Sn58Bi Solder Anisotropic Conductive Films and Vertical Ultrasonic Bonding,” that was carried out in collaboration with Nokia and received recognition for his work. Professor Paik’s team and Kim’s nanofiber grafted version of the anisotropic conductive film solves the issue of short-circuiting between micro-gap junction electrodes.

On March 5, students lined up outside the dining hall in Tae Wul Gwan (N13) to be the first ones to try out foodservice company IB Food’s new restaurant Grillcook. Grillcook offers a more western set of menus than its predecessor, foodservice company CJ Freshway’s The Place, with food options ranging from steaks to various kinds of pilafs and spaghetti. In mid-February, the KAIST General Affairs Team announced that Grillcook would be the successor to The Place, which had served the school for three years before theyrequested a withdrawal of their operation from KAIST last November.

Active KAIST 60303, a campaign designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle in KAIST, has been launched at the Lyu Keun-Chul Sports Complex (N3) under the leadership of Professor Seokhee Kim of KAIST Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and an exercise specialist. The number 60303 stands for a strenuous training regime consisting of 60 minutes of physical activity and 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day for 3 months. A total of 100 applicants, selected under a first-come-first-served basis, are currently enrolled in the program. Due to extreme popularity among students, the application was closed in merely two days.

From November 29 to December 3, a series of events was held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding of Daedeok Innopolis. The events took place at the National Science Museum in Daejeon. The commemoration consisted of an international conference, a patent exhibition, and an achievements exhibition. It was held with the theme “The Science and Technology We Achieved Together, the Creative Economy We Enjoy Together” and served as an opportunity to reflect upon Daedeok Innopolis’ 40-year history and to envision its future.

In the last 50 years, the Korean economy has been centered on the growth of large corporations. As its policies were mostly growth-oriented, the economy has seen significant advancement. However, as the welfare growth could not keep up with the economy, the problem of unemployment remained. For instance, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reports that currently Korea is ranked 23rd out of 36 countries in terms of the employment rate index. Therefore, in order to confront this issue and to open a new era of creative economy for the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) was founded this year by the government under President Geun-hye Park.

On November 11, the International Relations Team conducted a distinguished lecture series by speakers from University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC) Doctor Robert A. Easter, Doctor Lawrence B. Schook, and Doctor Andreas C. Cangellaris in the Matrix Hall of the KAIST Institute (KI) Building (E4). UIUC is one of the world’s greatest centers of education and research discovery, and has an annual operating budget of more than five billion United States dollars. Doctor Foster, who is currently the president of UIUC, highlighted the critical role of higher education as well as the importance of staying connected and relevant in the marketplace. He also focused on the myriad of partnerships among the three campuses of UIUC and universities in South Korea.

On November 26, the opening ceremony of Biosynergy Research Center with Medical Heritage was held at the Dream Hall of Chung Mun Sul Building (E16).
