Tuberculosis (TB) is a common and potentially lethal infectious disease found worldwide. Usually caused by various species of mycobacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it is transmissible between different species of animals as well as between individual people. Though most TB infections are transient and relatively inconspicuous, fatalities do occur if the disease is allowed to progress; there is a 50% or more mortality rate among the infected patients. TB usually occurs in the lungs (pulmonary TB) but can affect other parts of the body - such as the nervous system, kidney, and immune system - in which case it is termed extrapulmonary TB. These two types may coexist in a single individual. General symptoms of TB include fever, chills, night sweats, loss of appetite, weight loss, and fatigue.
