Last year’s KAIST Art and Music Festival (KAMF) was a huge success that brought some of the most well-known Korean independent bands and many music lovers to the KAIST campus. Organized by the Undergraduate and Graduate Student Council to enhance the cultural life at KAIST, KAMF provided opportunities to enjoy cultural events up close without having to travel to Seoul.

Two major changes in student policy made by the 27th Student Undergraduate Council, One Step, are the course retake policies and student union fees. Significant steps have been achieved through the student council’s activities and were finalized such that the policy changes were put into effect this very semester.

Since the closure of the spring semester, it has been a busy period for One Step, the Undergraduate Student Council. If we take a look at its achievements and future plans for this semester, it is possible to see that a diverse field of concerns is being tackled. Some of the changes that have occurred or are to be expected include organization of various events, implementation or revision of numerous policies, improvements in student welfare, confrontation of controversial issues, and an encouragement in the communications between One Step and the KAIST community.

On September 5, KAIST’s Student Health and Life Center and Lyu Keun-Chul Sports Complex Fitness Center held the 2013 Core Exercises Workshop from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the main court of the Lyu Keun-chul Sports Complex. The workshop was to promote a healthier lifestyle to KAIST students by helping them strengthen their core muscles.

The importance of university identity (UI) lies in its illustration of an institute's value and status. Although the current KAIST UI has been successful in fulfilling its role in representing KAIST for nearly two decades, there has recently been a calling for its modification. As a result, KAIST has started a six-month project to develop a new UI.

From August 19 to 20, KAIST held its first Asian Innovation and Entrepreneurship Association – National Bureau of Economic Research (AIEA-NBER) Conference. The underlying theme of this year’s conference was to explore the development and commercialization of innovation and entrepreneurship for economic prosperity between North America and Asia. The conference consisted of five sessions covering topics of entrepreneurship, innovation, regulation, and intellectual property, followed by two panel discussions involving innovation and entrepreneurship in North America and Asia.

A collaborative research team from KAIST’s and Kyonggi University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering developed a high performance lithium-air battery with significantly improved performance and lighter weight. The research team successfully used nanofibers and graphene composite materials to raise the energy performance of lithium batteries to five times that of conventional lithium-ion batteries. The research team was led by Professor Seokwoo Jeon and Professor Il-Doo Kim of KAIST and Professor Yong-Joon Park of Kyonggi University. Their findings were published in the August online issue of Nano Letters.

KAIST, in carrying out an extensive reshuffle to simplify organization and increase efficiency of administration, implemented the ombudsperson policy for the first time in Korea to mediate KAIST members’ opinions on any problems or difficulty. On September 9, in the appointment ceremony held at the president’s office, two professors, Sang-Yung Shin from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Hong Ku Shim from the Department of Chemistry, were appointed as the ombudspersons of KAIST.

During the first two weeks of the fall semester, the KAIST Freshman Administrative Team received applications for the 2013 Fall Coaching Program. The applications were limited to 20 KAIST freshmen, 17 Koreans and 3 foreigners. After the allocation of the coaches to the students, the program is due to run for the entire semester.

KAIST was placed 60th in the 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Universities Rankings, the highest record since QS started compiling rankings in 2004. University rankings in science and technology subjects excelled as well, placing KAIST 36th in the engineering and technology faculty ranking. KAIST has shown a significant rise in QS ranking, from the humble beginnings as 198th place in 2006 to 63rd place last year.

After months of renovation, the Academic Registrar’s Team re-opened for the 2013 fall semester. Located in the Creative Learning Building (E11), the Academic Registrar’s Team is arguably one of the busiest administrative departments in KAIST during the beginning of each semester. The redesigned office employs a user-friendly atmosphere, and after the completely overhauled renovation, provides students with an accessible environment and a flexible administrative process.

Professor In-Soo Suh of the Cho Chun Shik Graduate School for Green Transportation at KAIST developed the prototype Armadillo-T, a foldable micro electric vehicle. As one can infer from the name of the vehicle, it was designed after the animal armadillo. Also, it has three other significant features that make the vehicle so special: electric, micro, and foldable.
