On October 29, KAIST and the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA) signed an MOU in the field of environmental studies at the Main Administration Building (E14).

The IIASA is a scientific research institute, founded in 1972 in Laxenburg, Austria. The institute conducts policy-oriented research – which are independent of and completely unconstrained by political or national interests – on global issues that are too large or too complicated to be solved by a single nation or academic field. The institute is especially renowned for its research in the field of environmental studies, having distributed models on greenhouse gases and air pollutant reduction policies to European and Asian countries; National member organizations in Asia, Africa, Americas, Europe, and Oceania sponsor the institute.

IIASA Director General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pavel Kabat explained the background of this agreement, “KAIST has built its reputation as a leading research and educational institute. Its strength especially lies in the development of green technology and environmental policies by the Graduate School of Green Growth (GSGG) and the Graduate School of Energy Environment, Water, and Sustainability (EEWS) at KAIST.”

According to this agreement, the two institutes will conduct joint research in the field of diffusion analysis of green technology, develop an integrating evaluation model for the economy, energy, and environment, and develop an analysis system for water resources. Furthermore, they will actively promote an academic exchange program including workshops for sharing research ideas and achievements and constructing a hotline system to help their joint research projects.

The Dean of GSGG, Professor Jae-Kyu Lee, expects that the MOU will enable us to conduct an in-depth research on green technology and help in nurturing global “green leaders”.
