On November 1, at the Creative Learning Building (E11), a student leadership organization called the KAIST Leadership Executing Team (KAIST-LET) invited 120 children from various welfare centers all over the Daejeon and Sejong region to participate in “The Golden Bell Challenge”. “The Golden Bell Challenge” is based on the famous Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) quiz show “Dojeon! Golden Bell” (unofficial romanization), in which 100 high school students solve a series of increasingly difficult academic problems. In every round, students who answer the question incorrectly are eliminated until a victor remains. If show fails to single out a winner by the 50th question, there can be multiple winners.

K-LET is a student-led organization founded by the KAIST Leadership Center back in 2009. K-LET aims to provide students who have taken courses of leadership development the opportunity to test their new skills out on the field.

The event was aimed to instill confidence and enthusiasm in children from welfare centers in Daejeon so that they could take on and overcome challenges they might face later on in life.

In this Golden Bell Challenge, which was the fourth event this year, participants came from Songkang Social Welfare Center, Daedeok Youth Training Center, Sejong House of Youth and Culture, and the Jungchon Social Welfare Center. The challenge was also followed by a campus tour and one-on-one conversations with mentors from KAIST.

Lee Dong Uk, the president of K-LET, hopes, “This event will be remembered by the children as a joyful experience” and stated, “K-LET will continue to hold similar events that will boost the children’s morale and groom them into leaders of the future”.

21 students from Chungnam National University (CNU), who are members of CLC (CNU Leader’s Club) also joined forces with K-LET to turn the program into a great success.
