On September 16, Reuters News released the list of the World’s Top 100 Most Innovative Universities. Leading the list was Stanford University, with KAIST in close pursuit at tenth place, the only non-US school to place in the top 10. Following Stanford was Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. On the European front, the most innovative university in Europe was Imperial College London, ranked 11th.

Reuters survey aimed to answer the question, “how can potential faculty and students know if an institution is really transforming science and technology and impacting the global economy?” To find out which universities and institutions are regularly producing unique researches and encouraging their members to think creatively, Reuters set out to rank the World’s Top 100 Most Innovative Universities. The criteria of the survey focused on the number of academic papers, patent successes, global patents and citations, industry article citation impact, and the number of industry collaborative articles. The criteria were carefully chosen to evaluate the basic research performed at each university, and also the institution’s interest in protecting and commercializing their own discoveries in the scientific field. The list of Top Ten Most Innovative Universities published by Reuters helped to get the essence of what it means to be truly innovative in the field of science and technology.

Japan was the country with the second largest number of universities on the list after the United States. South Korea performed strongly as well, with a total of eight universities ranked on the list. The list of South Korean universities includes Pohang University of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Hanyang University.
