Tra-la-laaaa! Make way for the one and only Captain Underpants, for he is about to hit the screens for the first time! This March, DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox revealed the first trailer for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, causing a buzz among numerous fans that spent their childhood with this ridiculously underdressed superhero. After two months of anticipation, finally the time is near — the movie will be released in US theaters on June 2, both in 2D and 3D.

Captain Underpants is a massively popular children’s series created by Dav Pilkey that includes 12 books and three spin-offs. Ever since the publication of the first book The Adventures of Captain Underpants in 1997, the series has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide, and has been translated into over 20 languages. The story revolves around two mischievous fourth-grade boys called George Beard and Harold Hutchins. The pranksters of the Jerome Horwitz Elementary School, the boys always get in trouble with their cruel principal Mr. Krupp. One day, they decide to hypnotize Mr. Krupp into being nice. The plan goes awry, and they end up making their principal believe he is the superhero from the boys’ self-created comic books: Captain Underpants!

DreamWorks had been pursuing Pilkey for the right to make a movie out of the Captain Underpants series ever since 1997, until they finally acquired it in October 2011. The upcoming movie is directed by David Soren and is expected to closely follow the book, with Pilkey listed as one of the screenwriters. It will show the beginning of Captain Underpants’ adventures, from his birth to his first world-saving feat. The title of the movie, The First Epic Movie, suggests that there are many other installments to come of the series.

The movie will star the voice of Ed Helms as Captain Underpants, Kevin Hart as George Beard, and Thomas Middleditch as Harold Hutchins. It will be released in Europe and Asia between July and October.
