Elections for the 20th KAIST Undergraduate Clubs Union “Bi Sang” were held on Apr. 18. The elected president and vice president are Jeongeun Choi of the Department of Biological Sciences and Dahye Kang of the Department of Chemistry respectively, who are both in juniors.

83 students, including 72 representatives from currently active clubs on campus and 11 representatives from each club sub-categories, were qualified voters. 75 students voted with 64 approving the two candidates, one opposing and ten abstaining. With more than half the voters’ approval, Choi and Kang qualified as this year’s executive officers.

The elections for the 20th Clubs Union had been delayed since the beginning of this semester due to the lack of candidates for the two positions. With last year’s experience and training in the Clubs Union committee, Choi decided to run for president. According to Choi, her biggest goal is to promote efficient club activity both internally and externally.

“The interaction among various clubs at KAIST is in dire need,” said Choi.

As president, she aspires to promote and publicize all clubs at KAIST to strengthen members’ interaction within student-run clubs. Bi Sang will advertise club performances and competitions using posters around the school. Moreover, the 17th booklet on all active clubs at KAIST was published and handed out during the spring festival.

One of the biggest issues for clubs at KAIST has been the lack of clubrooms. According to Choi, Bi Sang plans to expand the availability of these necessary rooms and their use.

“I would like to maximize the use of the vacant spaces at IT Convergence Campus, where Munji and Hwaam dormitories are located,” said Choi. “If there are clubs that would like to use these rooms, they will be able to.”

Bi Sang, the title for the 20th Clubs Union, literally means to “soar into the sky.” As the title suggests, the 20th Clubs Union will run and manage all clubs at KAIST for the benefit of students – for example, by increasing the support funding for every club.

“The 19th Clubs Union has set a solid basis for all clubs at KAIST,” said Choi. “From here, my job as the president is to lead the 20th Clubs Union to further advance Bi Sang. We plan to get more work done, for all clubs on campus.”
