On May 20 at the Bio-Brain Engineering building, the Smart Campus idea contest will be held as part of KAIST’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The event is sponsored by the KAIST Office of University-Industry Cooperation and organized by StartUpKAIST, SIFE and members from other organizations. The event will start with several speakers talking about innovation in education and after the presentations of the finalist student teams' ideas, teams will be evaluated and sizable awards will be given for the top three ideas.

Envisioned by Professor Minhwa Lee of the Graduate School of Innovation & Technology Management, the main goal of Smart Campus is to provide an opportunity for people to showcase their ideas focused on improving education and student life through new technology. Ideas that can be readily implemented, are sustainable and make use of ubiquitous technologies such as smart phones are highly encouraged by the organizers. According to Mark Whiting, "The Smart Campus event is here to encourage interesting, innovative ideas about the future of education at KAIST. But we are also excited to promote entrepreneurship and start up activity with the competition. We hope the opportunity to win big prizes will boost the production of competitive, creative ideas that the university can implement on campus."

Ideas submissions will be made online until May 13 through the Smart Campus website (smartcampus.kaist.ac.kr) and the list of ideas accepted for presentation at the event will be released online by May 15. The prizes for first, second and third place are 5,000,000, 2,000,000 and 1,000,000 Korean Won respectively. Non-presenting students are also welcome to join the event and snacks and free t-shirts will be provided for those who attend on the day.
