POSTECH undefeated for third year straight

Shouts of “that’s not it, that’s not it!” filled the Sports Complex and the northern football pitch two weeks ago, as KAIST students in blue dragon-printed shirts rallied behind their teams to try and defeat an all-too-familiar foe. Even when the POSTECH team made an unlikely comeback to all but confirm their fourth consecutive victory, the supporters waited until the final whistle, hoping for a reversal of fortunes on the basketball court.

KAIST had been hoping to break POSTECH’s run of three consecutive wins (2007, 2008 and 2010 - an influenza outbreak having canceled the 2009 edition), and started in spectacular fashion, scoring a 60th minute match-winning goal in the football competition. POSTECH then managed to reverse the total score by taking the Artificial Intelligence (AI) battle (where pre-written AI codes are pitched against each other in a game involving virtual slimes and bombs) and StarCraft events. By the end of the first day, however, KAIST had managed to tie the scores at 150 apiece by emerging victorious from the StarCraft II event by a score of 2:1.

The second day saw KAIST take a 200-point lead by winning baseball and computer hacking. However, the POSTECH team managed back to back victories in the Science Quiz and basketball events, overturning the score to KAIST 350 : 450 POSTECH.

The 2011 KAIST-POSTECH Science War was held on September 23 and 24 at KAIST’s main Daejeon campus. The event was organized by Imagination Effect, the student Event Preparation Committee, aided by ELKA and numerous other clubs and student organizations.

Other events held during the Science War included performances by bands, cheerleader teams, a beer party and a club held inside the Creative Learning Building. The popular Korean hip-hop group Dynamic Duo made a closing ceremony appearance, to the delight of many of the students.
