Culture Done Right at Home

Imagine what it would be like to slide on a rainbow; perhaps red would give you the coziness of Santa’s belly; blue, the mindboggling excitement of venturing in a submarine; and purple, the scent of lavender that is mysterious and haunting. Movies can take you on this rainbow ride. You could be orange at one time and green at another. Be it love, fantasy, a walk in the woods, making a snowman, being a fighter in your favorite action movie, or all of them entangled together; you would not only find the deepest hue of your favorite genre, but also pull out movies of different colors from a pool of movie collections. Go on a rainbow ride in various ways; whichever method you choose, you will be on the ride.

Watcha
Watcha is a movie recommendation service developed by Frograms, a venture company. As its name implies, the program recommends new movies based on a record of your movie ratings; it functions much like a mood ring in that it takes a guess at the kinds of movies you would like to watch for the night. The more movies you rate, the more likely it is that you will like the recommended movies. In fact, if you rate twenty movies, the application will beg you to break thirty, and once you hit thirty, it will convince you to go for fifty. Watcha also organizes a connection between people who share similar movie interests. For example, if your friends like a new movie, Watcha takes a careful guess that you might like it as well. With its distinct algorithms, Watcha has become Korea’s most sought-after service for movie recommendations. You can sign up for Watcha via Facebook or your email account, or download the application on your smartphone. Watcha’s box office is always ready to surprise you with a wide spectrum of movies. On a side note, the chief executive officer of Frograms is Taehoon Park, who calls himself T-Pac and is a KAIST alumnus.

Film Critics
If you want a more in-depth analysis of movies, how about going through a list of film critics? You might be able to find the film critic(s) of your color. Taking a look through their personally ran blogs, online newspaper articles, or magazines can help you come to a better understanding of film technology, and get familiarized with professional tips on analyzing movies in a more objective fashion. Discovering how professional film critics evaluate movies could help you reason why you did not like certain genres of movies, rather than just putting them off for the sake of not being able to put up with them. You might be surprised to find yourself in love with a friend you have neglected or misunderstood for so long. You could also learn to see for better how a director used too much computer graphics, or how a movie contains concepts that are physically unrealistic, let alone taking imagination to the extreme, and how the effort to overexaggerate an effect actually spoiled everything else. Though it is easy to think that there is not really much to miss in movies, there seems to be quite a lot of hidden devices that are only visible to the professionals.
Short Films and Movie Making
If you are short on time, why not try short films? Short films are only a couple of minutes to tens of minutes long, and some of them even have discussion questions near the end of the film - food for thought! If you feel lonesome, you could let the films run, like a radio, imagine that there are people in the room, and delude yourself into thinking that the room is occupied with people. If you have had enough of movies, you could try writing scenarios and produce your own movie using a video camera and a video editing software, such as Windows Movie Maker; it could be something trivial, like having finger puppets and a small theater, or if you do not want to bother making such costumes, you could capture a breeze on a landscape, or focus your camera on a random spot for five minutes and call it a short film. While you are on the job, there is a chance that everything else will fade away.
Movies can take you on a rainbow ride, but not every ride is the same. Choosing how you want it to be, at least to some degree, is completely up to you; there will still be enough unexpected surprises to keep you happy! Contrary to the surprise movies can bring, movies did not just come out of the blue; they have developed from an integration of story-telling, novels, plays, and games - all forms of literature. One thing all of them have in common is that they do not have farewells, a consolation for people of all times. Such entertainments (or arts) are there for us whenever we want them, just like all colors of rainbow are down here with us in support, reminding us of our hopes forgotten.
