Dong Pyo Jeon emphasized creating a goal
On March 26, a workshop titled “Successful College Life and Planning Study Strategies,” a joint seminar from KAIST Center for Excellence in Learning and Hanyang University, was held at the Creative Learning Building (E11). The program’s target audience were freshmen and sophomores, but all students, regardless of year, were welcome to attend. Hanyang University’s Principal Researcher Dong Pyo Jeon was invited to provide guidelines for KAIST students to get the most out of their college life.

Researcher Jeon began with the importance of changing the students’ attitude towards college life. A recent survey indicated that students are mostly concerned with getting ready for a job and their grades. As a result, students get overly stressed about their grades or get pressured to do nothing but study. He explained that companies nowadays look for students who have experience and passion for a particular field, so students should not be obsessed with their grades. Rather, they should look for the opportunities that only youth and universities provide for the students. The twenties is the only time when people have a chance to experience a wide range of activities, such as sports, love, internship, drinking, club activities, and even failure, and learn life lessons that cannot be learned through books and classes. He went further to highlight the fact that effort is something that one does more of compared to others to achieve a goal - if students are just doing what others are, they are not putting in the effort.

In the second part of the workshop, Researcher Jeon talked about how and what to study. He stated that students tend to have a vague sense of what they want to do. In a recent research, it was shown that the most successful people have interpersonal intelligence and a complete understanding of oneself. Knowing one’s own weakness and trying to overcome the shortcomings instead of avoiding them is a crucial aspect of success. He also suggested for students to create a specific goal. The goals should include a due date and be measurable for many students create goals but do not carry them on.
