On May 23, KAIST hosted the Emerging Biomaterials 2014 Symposium. The symposium invited researchers from around the world to give talks about their research in the field of biomaterials engineering. The event was held in the Fusion Hall of the KAIST Institute building (E4). The participating researchers presented their latest important findings in biomaterials research such as functional biomaterials, energy biomaterials, bio-inspired materials, nanomedicine, drug and gene delivery, theranostics, and tissue engineering.

Professors from other Korean universities, including Hanyang University, POSTECH, Sungkyunkwan University, and Gangwon National University, were in attendance as well as those from abroad: Denmark, Singapore, Japan, China, and the United States. Finally, Professors Chan Beum Park, Haeshin Lee, and Yoon Sung Nam from KAIST gave their presentations as well.

Doctor Jawoski from Hanyang University presented his account on “Direct 3D Printing of Biomedical Architectures.” He then sought advice or answers the audience members had to his questions. Doctor Khademhosseini from Harvard University talked about hydrogels, which are made out of polymers and can be inserted into the body for various roles, such as drug delivery and implant device protection. Doctor Khademhosseini used hydrogel’s applications in stem cell engineering for tissue regeneration. 

The forum was held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and participants were allowed to walk in and out freely and watch the presentations of their choice. Entrance fees were 80,000 Korean Won for KAIST students, and 150,000 Won for non-KAIST students or faculty.
