On May 20, Soonsung Hong, the Evernote Public Speaking Ambassador and author of Evernote Manual, was invited to host a lecture on “How to study with Evernote” at the Creative Learning Building (E11). This special lecture was part of the KAIST 2014 Spring Semester Learning Strategy Workshop, and was hosted by the KAIST Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT).

Evernote is a software service founded by Stepan Pachikov that is principally used for note-taking. Supporting a variety of mobile and stationary platforms, Evernote is considered to be the dominant note-taking software application available on the market. Two stratified services are available on free and premium accounts, with the latter providing improved storage, security, and speed.

Hong initiated his lecture by commenting that indexing and retrieving information takes up a third of a modern employee’s working hours. Furthermore, the environment in which a student studies has transformed into a networked, digital one. “While the amount of readily accessible information is increasing at an exponential rate, we cannot keep up with providing management capabilities to properly organize large amounts of information,” Hong noted.

He stated that Evernote is the optimal solution to record, store, retrieve, and manage information with a minimal learning curve and time input. “Evernote is used by 85 million people worldwide, all of whom benefit from Evernote’s cloud-based storage [...] Cloud-based storage also significantly reduces the probability of catastrophic loss of information.”

Also emphasized were the various features of Evernote, such as the organization of notes into notebooks and stacks. Another feature Hong noted was the easiness in sharing - in collaborative research or group projects, Evernote can be utilized to easily share documents among group members by setting a notebook to share mode, rather than resorting to sending back and forth numerous e-mails, which can be extremely cumbersome.

Hong started his career as an information technology (IT) security expert, focusing on information recovery and network load balancing. After working as a software consultant, he began to author books on cutting edge IT trends.
