On February 18 OASIS (Office of Advising and Support for International Students) and International Relations Team (IRT) held the Welcoming Reception and Club Day at the International Center (W2-1). KISA representative Andrii Omelianovych, along with representatives from other student clubs, presented to the international students the clubs and organizations open and related to foreigners on campus. There was also a performance of  KAIST’s Jazz band Changjak Donghwa during the middle of the event.

The event was a good opportunity for the freshmen to find out more about the clubs in KAIST. After a speech from Dr. Yung Kook Choo (OASIS), The KAIST International Student Association (KISA) introduced their main activities regarding the international community. This was followed by the Undergraduate Student Council President Young-chul Kwak, and then by various other student associations. Differing from the magazine published in Korean by the Clubs Union, the presentations were all held in English, showing an increasing level of interest in international students.

Widely advertized by OASIS to the international community, the event attracted not only freshmen but also other international undergraduates and graduate students. “It was very nice actually to hear from the heads of the clubs because before I had no ideas about the clubs around KAIST. Also, since all the clubs are in Korean it might be a motivation for some students to learn Korean when they join such clubs," said Mychailo Doroshenko, a junior from Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

Another well commented attraction was the performance of Changjak Donghwa. People who attended the reception gave very positive comments about it. On the words of Uno Wikborg, Ph.D. candidate at Industrial and Systems Engineering, “A charismatic sax player took some of the focus away from the talented vocal who was backed up well by a nice mix of instruments”. Mychailo also commented that he “didn’t know that we had such splendid bands at KAIST. It would be nice if they advertised their performances in English as well”.

OASIS also enjoyed the opportunity to advertise all activities related to the international community for the following semester. A brochure with the detailed schedule and description of the events was handed in to the attendees. More information regarding international events can be found at their office (International Center) or their website (http://oasis.kaist.ac.kr).
