Professor Sukyung Park is now the youngest Presidential Aide

On May 4, Professor Sukyung Park from the Department of Mechanical Engineering was appointed as the Science and Technology Adviser to the South Korean President, Moon Jae-in. In addition to being the first female professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Park is now the youngest presidential aide.

During a briefing on May 4, a Blue House spokesman, Min-seok Kang, announced the appointment of Professor Park to the advisory position to fill a two-month vacancy.

After receiving her BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering at KAIST, Sukyung Park finished her PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. Prior to joining KAIST as a faculty member, she worked as a senior researcher at Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) and as a senior research fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School. Professor Park joined KAIST in 2004 as the first female professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, specializing in the field of biometric mechanical behaviors. Previously, she has also been a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology.

Explaining reasons behind this decision, the Blue House spokesman recognized Park’s talent and extensive experience in science and technology policy. “[She] will contribute to accelerating the government’s push for science and technology innovation, especially in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector,” said Kang.
