On September 20, KAIST announced that Professor Keonjae Lee’s research team from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering succeeded in developing a biocompatible, flexible Gallium Nitride Light Emitting Diode (GaN LED). The research team also discovered that the light from the LED responds differently to the antigen-antibody reaction, detecting the antibody of prostate cancer.

The undergraduate student council association Urinuri is conducting a fund-raising campaign for Solbi Kim, sister of undergraduate student Geon Kim from the Department of Computer Science who passed away this summer.On July 8, Geon Kim lost his life in a fire at his home in Bugae-dong, Incheon. KAIST’s first international student’s dream has come true. Doctor Yan Long of the Department of Electrical Engineering will be working at Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (IMEC) in Belgium as a researcher starting August 1. A Chinese of Korean descent, Doctor Yan was born in Yanbian. He was selected as the first international student at KAIST in 2003 after graduating Yanbian high school number one in China. He received his bachelor’s degree in 2007 then attained his master’s degree in 2009. Afterwards, he finished his doctorate course in two and a half years.

KAIST became the first institute in Korea to introduce an Industrial Liaison Program Membership (ILPM). ILPM is a new model of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that connects member companies with the latest research developments at the institute. It differs from a common MOU in that the institute plays a more active role in technology consulting.
