On November 28, Department of Environmental Science Professor Ki Taek Lee of Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) announced that with using fossil fuels, anthropogenic nitrogen caused by human activity in industries is being rapidly spread over the Pacific Ocean. The research team, from its results of nitrate concentration detailed investigation, found out that with the development of Southeast Asian countries came the exponential growth of nitrate concentration and that the main cause for this was nitrogen pollution. According to the researchers, the result of this research is an important proof that nitrogen pollution can not only affect the shore but oceans at a rapid pace. Fossil fuel use and the use of fertilization that can lead to inflow of harmful nitrogen material can lead to destruction of nutrient salt that is the basis of the aquatic ecosystem. Furthermore, harmful nitrogen flow can also lead to the destruction of the phytoplankton system, which can also be a lethal blow to the ecosystem. The result of this research was posted in Science as the November 28 article, under the title of “Increasing anthropogenic nitrogen in the Pacific Ocean”.
