On November 2, most on-campus sports facilities reopened for a one month trial period of operation under strict disease prevention guidelines. This follows the downgrading of national social distancing measures to Level 1 on October 12, and satisfies the increasing demand for the exercise facility operation from KAIST members.

In coordination with the KAIST Task Force (TF) for the Prevention of COVID-19, the General Affairs Team announced this second phase of reopening and operating facilities on October 27. Phase 1 — which saw the reopening of outdoor sports fields and tennis courts — began on May 11, but the second wave of coronavirus cases delayed further operation of indoor facilities until now. In this trial period, the Sports Complex (N3) dance studios and screen golf rooms will be operated along with all gyms in dormitories, the Main Administration Building (E14), the Auditorium (E15), and those in the Munji and Seoul campuses. The trial period will run until November 30 subject to government guidelines, with the possibility of extension to be reviewed.

Each facility has been designated a disease prevention manager to oversee and implement operation guidelines. This responsibility includes keeping a list of users and administering a temperature check upon entry, as in the case in many public facilities. Users should wear a mask, maintain a distance of two meters from each other, and are allowed a maximum of two hours in any given session. Each gym or sports room also has a maximum user limit, ranging between 5 and 20 people depending on the size of the facility. In addition, the dormitory gyms will employ a system of gym cards to manage users; students should submit their ID cards to the dormitory supervisor before using the facilities, and will receive it back when they return the gym card.

Sports facilities not yet open include the basketball and racquetball courts in the West Student Center (W2), the swimming pool in E15, and the dance studios in the Chang Young Shin Student Center (N13-1).
