The Student Life Team is currently developing a new dormitory management system to allow undergraduate and graduate students to room together.

In the past, undergraduate and graduate students could not be roommates due to the difference in assignment periods — with undergraduates residing in dormitory for four months and applying separately for summer or winter breaks, while graduate students are bound to a six-month period. Additionally, the possibility of graduate students having abnormal sleep and life patterns were taken into consideration when separating undergraduate and graduate students during the dormitory allocation process.

Therefore, in the case that undergraduate and graduate students room together, there are a few limitations. Only the Narae and Dasom Halls for female students and Mir and Heemang Halls for male students (W6 and W4), which are the dormitories that already house both undergraduate and graduate students on separate floors, are open for applications. The period of dormitory assignment for the undergraduate student also becomes six months. If the undergraduate student does not have a valid reason to stay for the break (winter or summer semester), both students will be forced to move out and undergo the resignation process.

As in previous years, the dormitory assignment system will classify students into one of the following groups, in order of decreasing priority: 1) undergraduate students in their 8th semester or less, 2) students assigned to dormitories outside of campus during the previous semester, 3) graduate students who are freshmen, 4) MS students in their 4th semester or less, PhD students in their 8th semester or less, and students in the integrated MS-PhD program in their 10th or 12th semester or less, depending on the program, 5) students who did not submit their health checkup on time, and 6) students who have exceeded the duration of their program. 

During the dormitory assignment process, a virtual room is created, consisting of the creator and roommate(s). Normally, the “priority level” of the virtual room is based on the priority level of the room’s creator, unless one of the members is in priority level 5 or below, in which case the level would correspond to the lowest level among the room members. However, with the new dormitory system, if a room consists of both undergraduate and graduate students, the graduate student will automatically assume the role of the room creator and thus, the virtual room’s priority level will correspond to that of the graduate student.

The new dormitory management system will be implemented starting Spring 2021.
