On April 22, NAVER announced the establishment of the “KAIST-NAVER Hypercreative AI Center” in its new office building “1784” in Seongnam-si of Gyeonggi Province. The center was built based on an agreement made last May that pledged three years of joint research and technological development centered on AI.

The “Hypercreative AI” will model the human brain and make autonomous decisions, while the AI Center aims to develop technologies linked to the creation of multimedia content. Professor Song Chong, the Head of the Graduate School of AI, said that “in the AI center, we will make AI for automated content creation that surpasses humans in both creativity and ability.”

With funding in the range of tens of billions KRW, around 10 KAIST professors and 100 researchers from KAIST and NAVER have participated in creating “Hypercreative AI” that would allow anyone to create high-quality multimedia content. To boost AI-related abilities of students, KAIST also created AI-related courses for graduate students that teach students research trends in deep learning and how they are being used to solve problems in NAVER.

During the center’s opening ceremony on April 21, KAIST President Kwang Hyung Lee stated, “AI will develop to become more creative and better equipped in understanding human sensibilities; the ‘Hypercreative AI Center’ will have an important role in this matter [through innovative synergy] between KAIST’s AI expertise and NAVER’s data and cloud technology.”
