MOU with Xanadu Quantum Technologies

To advance expertise in quantum technologies, KAIST signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Canadian quantum computing hardware and software company Xanadu Quantum Technologies (Xanadu) on September 13. The agreement outlines a commitment to jointly develop educational programs and nurture talent in the quantum computing sector.

Under the terms of this agreement, the KAIST Graduate School of Quantum Science and Technology (QST) and Xanadu will collaborate to design a specialized curriculum focusing on quantum computing and practical quantum software programming. Moreover, Xanadu will provide KAIST students access to their open-source software, PennyLane, and cloud-based hardware.

This partnership aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by offering hands-on education and enabling graduates to enter the quantum technology sector immediately. It also seeks to strengthen international collaboration, particularly with Canada, which is renowned for its advancements in quantum technology.

KAIST QST was established in February this year, and its first batch of students commenced their academic journey in August. To train talents in various quantum technology domains, KAIST has been collaborating with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) through initiatives like the Joint Supervision Professor Program, where researchers from KRISS serve as adjunct professors at KAIST QST. By partnering with Xanadu, KAIST QST is now poised to further its multinational industry collaborations.

Christian Weedbrook, CEO of Xanadu, expressed his optimism, saying, "We have high expectations for PennyLane's utilization in KAIST's educational programs. Through this collaboration, we hope to contribute to the development of talent ready to work in the quantum industry."

KAIST QST Dean Eunseong Kim also expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "It is a great honor for Xanadu to become QST's first international MOU partner. The cooperation between our institutions will serve as a cornerstone in securing world-class technology in the field of quantum science and technology while nurturing top-tier professionals."

MOU with KEPCO Engineering & Construction

In a separate development, KAIST has also signed an MOU with KEPCO Engineering & Construction (KEPCO E&C) aimed at enhancing human resources capacity and fostering collaboration in the nuclear energy sector.

Under this agreement, both institutions will commit to mutual support in strengthening human resources, including academic events, guest lectures by experts, joint participation in research and development projects, technology information exchange, and collaborative technical efforts. Additionally, courses tailored to meet KEPCO E&C's needs in the nuclear engineering and quantum engineering departments will be developed.

KEPCO E&C President & CEO Sung-Arm Kim emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, "Through this MOU, both institutions will share expertise in nuclear energy talent development and the latest nuclear technology information, creating synergy for nuclear technology development."

President Kwang Hyung Lee of KAIST expressed his expectations for the partnership, saying, "Through the exchange of KAIST's excellent educational and research capabilities and KEPCO E&C's exceptional human and material resources, we hope to contribute to creating a happier energy for humanity beyond the borders of South Korea."
