A special exhibition named La Vocation de Lumière (“The Calling of Light”) is being held at the Kim En Joong Hall on the fourth floor of the Academic Cultural Center (ACC). The exhibit began on September 18 and will remain for members of the KAIST community and the public until December 29.

The exhibit showcases work by Father En Joong Kim, who has been appointed as a visiting professor of the KAIST Department of Industrial Design since August 2022. Fr. Kim received his education from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University, the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, and the Catholic University of Paris. Over the years, he has become a world-renowned artist with over 200 exhibitions, including stained glass work for 50 European churches. His work has garnered him recognition as a top 10 stained glass artist in the world by the Swiss daily newspaper Le Matin, and he was dubbed the “Painter of Light”.

The centerpiece of La Vocation de Lumière is an installation that can be found at the skylight of the ACC, consisting of 53 sheets of hand-painted glass with a total area of 68.02 m2. The paintings on the glass are intended to evoke different shapes and colors throughout the day as the light hits it from different angles. Fr. Kim and KAIST worked with Glasmalerei Peters Studios from Germany in order to realize Fr. Kim’s vision for his work. In addition to the large installation, nine original paintings by Fr. Kim are also on display on the fourth floor of the ACC.

Fr. Kim said, "Art and science have the same role as a means of combining people and conveying ideas, but science is explained as a concept and art is said as an aesthetic.” He hopes that members of the community can be inspired by works of art.
