On March 7, the completion ceremony for the Basic Science Building was held at the KAIST Daejeon campus. The construction began on July, 2011 and took 18 months to complete. The building has 8 floors, of which one floor is located underground and has a gross area of 13,258 m2. The Basic Science Building is set up with state-of-the-art experimental equipments necessary for integrated research in the fields of basic sciences, such as biology, physics, chemistry, and nano-science. The building will be used as a laboratory by professors, students, and researchers in the field of basic sciences.

The construction was largely aided by the generous donation from Chang-won Kim, chairman of AMKORE. In 2009, Chairman Kim donated 1 million U.S. dollars (1.1 billion Korean Won) to KAIST for research purposes in the field of basic sciences, and the school decided to invest an additional 18 billion Korean Won to construct the Basic Science Building. Chairman Kim and his family were invited as honored guests to the ceremony, and Former President Nam Pyo Suh, along with approximately 100 faculty members, expressed his gratitude.

In the ceremonial speech, Former President Suh said that with the Basic Science Building, KAIST has an institute ready for integrated research in various basic sciences and expects research results that will contribute to advancements in humanity.
