The Fourth University Scholars Leadership (USL) Symposium will be held from August 1 to 7 in Manila, Philippines. Approximately one thousand delegates will attend this symposium, consisting of students, student entrepreneurs, professors, and public workers in prestigious institutes around the world. This program was initiated by Humanitarian Affairs (HA) United Kingdom, and is held annually in different countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The symposium will help students develop character as student ambassadors through experiential learning and provide them with opportunities to practice servant leadership. The aim is to give students in developed countries a chance to understand the social conditions in developing countries so that they can better serve and learn from them. Students will truly experience the meaning of global citizens in today’s society.

Supporters of the symposium include the United Nations (UN) Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Youth Unit – New York, and Ministers of Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Participants will attend lectures given by 13 renowned leaders worldwide, including the young millionaire from Singapore and members from the CNN Hero List. Also, there will be a competition hosted by UNESCO and HA which will award 2,000 U.S. dollars to three winning projects. The projects in the competition are to focus on the topic “Solutions to Poverty Issue of United Nation’s Millennium Development Goal.” Participation is voluntary, and outstanding participants will be screened by personnel from Oxford University and HA and will be given a chance to attend the Oxford Symposium, which is scheduled for July, 2014, as a representative of Asia.

Students wishing to attend the Symposium must possess strong leadership potential, genuine appreciation for different perspectives and individuals with different backgrounds and interests, a consideration for others, and an interest in serving society. The registration fee is 750 U.S. dollars, which includes hotel accommodations, transportation, and meals. The full list and different registration packages can be found on the symposium website, and the application deadline is April 30.
