The KAIST Science Library (E9) is holding various events for students to promote the use of and familiarity with the library system. On April 4, its long planned and awaited event, “4444: Catch the Criminal!” was officially launched. Each four in the event name 4444 represents the month, day, time, and number of clues, indicating the starting day and time and the students’ mission to find four clues to solve the mystery.

The first clue was given on the KAIST library blog (http://libguides.kaist.ac.kr/bookmark), the second clue on the library main homepage (http://library.kaist.ac.kr) on April 5, the third on the KAIST Portal website (http://portal.kaist.ac.kr) on April 8, and the last on KAIST’s online forum ARA (http://ara.kaist.ac.kr) on April 9, all at 4 p.m. The students participated by leaving comments under the quizzes and the library revealed clues to those who correctly answered the quiz. To provide assistance to the students, the library announced the books each clue was from, including The Ancestor’s Tale: A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Life by Richard Dawkins, I, Robot by Issac Asimov, Think Harder! by Nong-Moon Hwang, and Natur Geschichet(n) by Josef H. Reichholf. The books were available in the Suggested Readings section on the first floor of the library, but not available for checkout. On April 10, the students had to declare who the criminal was and which mystery novel they were from. On April 12, the winners were announced, including those who answered first for each day and a few that were selected by lottery, and they were given prizes such as a wireless mouse, USB, and reading mileages.

The KAIST Science Library has been actively adding new features to the library website - creating a KAIST library application for smartphones, hosting events, and even installing recycling bins to keep the library cleaner - so that the students can utilize the library to its fullest potential and be encouraged to read more. The library has also been sending consistent e-mails on tips for searching in the library, reading lists, manuals for the library website and application, and notable events, such as the winners for the UCC contest and its Education Lecture series.
