The Committee of Core Values, created under the new leadership of President Sung Mo Kang, is ready to set sail. Despite the outstanding achievements and long history of KAIST, President Kang found that there was no core committee that represented the entire school. He believed that there must be a set system of principles and culture for all faculties, students, employees, and any member that comprise the KAIST community to follow. Currently, tentative members include 8 students, 5 employees, and 10 professors, with Professor Jae Kyu Lee of the Graduate School of Energy, Environment, Water and Sustainability (EEWS) as the committee’s possible head. The members were diversely chosen in hopes of gathering collective opinions from various groups within campus to uncover core values, under which every one is treated equally, and put them to practice.

There are also expectations that the Committee of Core Values would become a portal for students to voice their opinions. In the original plan, the spot allotted for students was limited to four, but the Undergraduate Student Council argued that it was unfair, and the opinion was taken up to the Central Maintenance Committee who granted their terms of allowing eight nominated students to the Committee. Members include Chan Park, (Former President of the Graduate Student Council), Sang Won Jin (Head of the Graduate Student Rights Center), Yoon Seok Lee (President of the Undergraduate Student Council), Kyuhong Byon (Vice President of the Student Club Union), Gang In Kim (Head of the Department of Computer Science), Sang Uk Kim (policy maker for the Undergraduate Student Council), and two more graduate students. The Undergraduate Student Council has created a taskforce team to carryout the duties assigned by the Committee of Core Values, and aims to make several requests, especially regarding the creation of the Student Declaration. The Student Declaration includes everything from basic rights, duties, and veto power to promote student equality, trust, and cooperation within the school community, and a transparent maintenance by the administration.
