On March 22, the Best Paper Award Ceremony for Fall 2012 was held in the International Conference Room of the School of Humanities and Social Science Building (N4). The ceremony is an event jointly held by the College of Cultural Science and KAIST’s English as a Foreign Language program to reward students who have submitted outstanding papers for the courses offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences every semester. The award has been introduced in the fall semester of 2009 to encourage creativity of undergraduate students and to improve their English writing skills.

In the fall semester of 2012, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences offered 69 courses in English. Among the 20 papers recommended by the professors from these courses, one paper received the Grand Prize Award, two received the Second Prize Award, and four were given the Honorable Mention Award.

The Grand Prize Award was presented to Jongmin Lee and Maneerat Termtanasombat as a group from the Behavioral Finance course taught by Professor Jeounghoon Kim. The title of the essay was “Analysis of Market Manipulation in Diablo III.” The Second Prize Awards were given to Young Rak Kim and Joon Woo Park, who wrote “Does Artist’s Intent Matter?” for the Art and Philosophy course, and “Beyond Liberalization” for the Understanding Globalization course.

The Honorable Mention Awards were given to Yeonsoo Choi, who wrote “Blurred Space” for the Renaissance and Baroque course; Enoch Kang, whose essay title was “Is Gender Bias a Problem for Scientific Objectivity?” for the Philosophy of Science course; Seong Keun Yoo, who wrote “Sue Bridehead, Woman of Individuality, Trapped in the ‘Male Gaze’” for the Special Lecture on English Literature <Woman and Novel> course; and Jungwoo Shin, whose essay title was “A Review: Current States and Prospects of the Development of Tin (Sn) as a High Capacity Anode for the Future Li-ion Batteries” in the English Science Writing course. It was a meaningful ceremony for both the students and professors to congratulate each other for their efforts and achievements.
