A photo contest organized by KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy and sponsored by Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC) is open for submissions of photos or videos that portray the everyday life as a researcher. Photo applications are due by December 15, and user-created content (UCC) videos can be submitted until January 15 of next year.

The UCC contest attempts to gather the joys and woes of the everyday lives of a science or engineering researcher captured by applying contestants. Applicants can submit UCCs and are eligible to win prizes for outstanding works. For photos, twenty 3rd place awards with prize money of 100,000 Korean Won will be given, three 2nd place awards with 300,000 Korean Won, and the grand prize with 1,000,000 Korean Won.
Applicants for the video contest portion can either submit video clips shorter than 90 seconds or full-length videos no more than six minutes. The short video clip grand prize winner will be awarded 1,500,000 Korean Won, and full-length video grand prize winner will receive 2,000,000 Korean Won as prize money. Two 2nd prize winners and three 3rd prize winners will be awarded respectively for each section.
Professor Chihyung Jeon of KAIST Graduate School of Science and Technology Policy, who is managing the UCC contest, said, “Ordinarily, it is easy for us to think of science photos that show us microscopic images of cells, pictures of nebulae captured by astronomic telescopes, and bullets breaking and penetrating glass windows. Through this contest, we instead attempt to show the life and expressions of scientists behind these moments of discovery. We hope researchers working in the field can share their lively, inspirational, or emotional moments in their research through photos or video clips.” Interested applicants can access their homepage (http://scienceculturedj.tistory.com) for more information.
