What is the most influential news that heated up the scientific and technological community in Korea this year? The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) announced 31 candidates for Top 10 Webzine News for the Year 2013.
Since its foundation in 1966, KOFST has represented the entire community of 5 million scientists and engineers in Korea. KOFST aims to foster and support science and technology societies, encourage scientists to get engaged with society, enhance the rights and interests of scientists, increase public understanding of scientific discoveries and theories, and support national growth by undertaking study, planning, research, and advice on science and technology policies.
Since 2005, KOFST has officially nominated 10 Webzine headline news every year to inspire an interest of the general public in science and technology. The selection committee has shortened the list to a total of 31 candidates from the innumerable pieces of scientific technology news and research results from December 1, 2012 to November 30, 2013.
The 10 winning candidates will be chosen by evaluation from the selection committee, consisting of experts in each field of science and technology, and the results of public voting poll via the official online website (http://10news.kofst.or.kr) or the mobile website which can be accessed through its Quick Response (better known as QR) code. The public voting poll was open for 13 days, from November 21 to December 4. The final nomination result will be announced through their official website on December 13.

The nomination standards include contribution to science and technology development, interest of the general public, and contribution to the popularization of science. Many of the candidates for the nomination are the research achievements made by the professors at KAIST, such as Armadillo-T, the electric car that parks itself and folds nearly in half to free up space in crowded cities.
