On November 26, the opening ceremony of Biosynergy Research Center with Medical Heritage was held at the Dream Hall of Chung Mun Sul Building (E16). Yo-Eob Lim, the head of Future Technology Department from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP), as well as over 200 experts in science technology from 12 different institutions across the country - including the National Research Foundation of Korea, KAIST, Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, and Yonsei University - participated in this opening ceremony.
Biosynergy Research Center with Medical Heritage was established to reanalyze the effect of traditional natural substances, which are mostly based on empirical evidence from the past, using biotechnology. Applying the virtual human body computer model and Omics technology, the research team aims to develop a new technology which can help investigate the effect of traditional natural substances and analyze how the natural complex compounds affect the human body.

Initiated as part of the bio and medical technology development project of MSIP, the research project will invest in total 150 billion Korean Won for the next 10 years. Professor Doheon Lee of the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering of KAIST, who was appointed Head of Biosynergy Research Center with Medical Heritage, said, “By applying the virtual human body computer model, which uses Information Technology (IT) and Biochemical Technology (BT) convergence technology, we plan to develop a fundamental technology and build a cooperative system among many industries of natural substance medicine and functional food. Through this cooperation, we will be able to create a new industry and also enable customized medical treatment.”
