On November 27 and 28, the first Institute for Basic Science (IBS) Research Conference was held at the Daejeon Convention Center. Organized by IBS, this year’s conference was held under the theme “Breaking the boundaries of basic science.”
Researchers and experts from various institutions including KAIST, University of California-Santa Cruz, Yale University, Tsinghua University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, and Sungkyunkwan University, participated in the conference and gave presentations.
The conference was organized to encourage the development of science and technology in Korea and to promote active interaction between various fields of science, research institutions, and nations. Since its establishment in 2011, IBS has formed a total of 17 research groups and has worked to share their research results with other researchers and experts from across disciplines. In the conference, research results of IBS were introduced, and the trend in some of the world’s leading researches as well as science and technology policy were discussed in order to suggest a new paradigm and direction in scientific research.
The conference included the presentation session, which was carried out with four different topics each day. The topics of the presentations were not only limited to basic science, but also encompassed a wide range of topics such as science and technology policy and even research equipment management.

On the first day of the conference, topics such as “Discovery of New Materials: Synthesis and Application,” “Brain Science,” “Understanding of Universe and Particle,” and “Physics and Materials” were presented. On November 28, there was another presentation session which introduced various topics such as “Complexity in Biology,” “Geometric Approach to Math and Physics,” “Policy and Communication,” and “Strategic Management of Research Equipment.” Finally, at the poster session, over 50 research papers by graduate students, post doctorate students, and other researchers, were selected and introduced. The conference ended with the presentation of the Best Poster Award and the closing ceremony.
