The Korea Office of Postal Service at KAIST, located between Cafeteria (N11) and the Undergraduate Library (N10), is set to close by July 1. This closing is a part of an overall trend of closing 114 post offices on college campuses across the nation, which includes Chungnam National University and many others in the Chungcheong province. The main reason for closing is the decreasing mailing volume at post offices as technology continues to make paper mails obsolete. This led to reduced profits for the post offices, so the Korea Office of Postal Service decided to close its branches on college campuses in order to reduce operational costs.

However, the KAIST Post Office handled 159,000 mail last year alone, and the lack of the post office next year is expected to cause many difficulties among students and faculty. In addition, many KAIST students use the post office to set up bank accounts to receive the monthly stipends from the university. The school is looking for ways to mitigate the inconveniences that will be caused by the closing of the post office. According to Seungwoo Je, President of the Undergraduate Student Council, the KAIST Secretary Team is looking for ways to continue providing mailing and shipping services for students after the post office shuts down. The most likely option being considered is setting up a post office run by the school, but the details of future plans are still being discussed by the school administrators. The Korea Office of Postal Service automated teller machines (ATMs) will remain in service on campus despite the closing.

For other banking services, KAIST students can use the post office located on the second floor of the Hanbit Plaza, which is located near the Hanbit apartments in Eoeun-dong just outside the West Gate.
