Saying that KAIST is diverse is a bit of an understatement. The institute has put in a lot of effort to ensure that there is no shortage of people from every continent here in our international community. Look left and there’s someone from Europe; look right, there’s a person from Africa. There’s no end to the different types of people you can meet and talk with and no doubt, since they’re from di

The cold slowly approaches. It starts to wrap around us like a silent snake, giving us a mixed feeling of discomfort and fear. No longer come the days of t-shirts and shorts; it’s the time to get out the thick stuff: sweaters, jackets, wind breakers. Layers is the name of the game. I remember when I hated winter. The cold meant I always had to wear at least three times my body thickness in clothes

I have a regret in my life. It's something that became a part of my personality for many years and have only just recently took steps to correct it. I regret the fact that I'm scared of talking. It baffled me why I didn't take the time earlier to think about why I am like this and didn't do anything about it.Thinking back, there were two major factors, my upbringing and my history of screw ups

It is the month of November. Winter is coming to KAIST and this year the cold has come surprisingly early. The sudden drop in temperature will make you want to stay in your rooms as you bundle up in layers and drink something nice and hot. If you do ever have to go outside, you may enjoy the rare moments of silence that comes along with the winter season, but not this semester. Instead, the air ma

October has come, and the dust is starting to settle. The weather is getting colder, and both people and midterm panic are starting to settle in. However, it’s never too late to introduce some new faces, and certainly not for the international community. This past September, the International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS) introduced their newest Student Services Coordinator, Sejin Ba

Two years ago, I was in Daejeon for the first time. The semester and my university life had started, and boy was it awkward and messy. I first went to the orientation and tried to memorize all the information, but apparently forgot the part where I had to go to the OASIS office to get my folder with my ID card, health insurance forms, and other vital documents. Then I registered for the buddy prog

My city, Vancouver, has an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, clear skies, occasional rain, and very little bugs during the summertime. It is about as moderate as you can get. Korea, however, has a monster of a summer: the sun bombards everyone with unrelenting infernal fury; July and August bring typhoons that blacken the sky; mosquitoes run rampant, draining all blood in their path, and

On May 9, KAIST International House hosted Korean Day, the first day of the annual Korean Day and Night, to give international students an interactive experience to familiarize themselves with several features and aspects of Korean culture and history. The event was available to a limited number of registrants, who took part in several interactive activities, including crafting paper lanterns, making rolls of gimbap (Korean seaweed-wrapped rice rolls), and singing and dancing to pansori (Korean genre of musical storytelling).

There is no lack of social media sites nowadays, but none of these is workplace- or university- friendly, as they are only meant for our personal social lives. This is where Yammer comes in. Yammer is Microsoft’s social site that focuses on workplaces and universities to get information efficiently sent to the right people. Introducing this site to KAIST is Jungil Lee, the new manager for the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The KAIST Herald interviewed him to discuss his reasons and goals with the site.

2013 was quite the year. KAIST underwent new political figures (KAIST International Students Association President Amalina Wahab, and the Undergraduate Council Blossom), changes in infrastructure (Office of Advising and Supporting for International Students becoming International Scholar and Student Services, Tae Wul Gwan’s (N13)new cafeteria Grillcook), and increased international reputations (influx of exchange of students and higher global university rankings). Though technically three months late, the new year has started, and we can look forward to familiar events like the strawberry parties, the culture festival, summervacation, and new unknowns.

Another year has come to a close. The temperature is dropping, students are cramming, and resolutions are forming as we look back at a tumultuous year and look forward to the changes in the future. International Student and Scholar Society (ISSS) is no exception, and The KAIST Herald interviewed Haena Kang and Grace You to reminisce the past year, and what ISSS and the international community have to look forward to.

On November 7, Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines. The typhoon caused considerable damage, razing countless buildings and homes – the Philippines has suffered a blow that can never be truly recovered. There now lie enormous and countless obstacles in the way of a safe and happy future. The most tragic part of this disaster is the impact on the people: 10,000 are estimated to have perished, and 660,000 have lost their homes. Emergence of riots, looting of aid service centers, and ransacking of grocery warehouses were seen as a result of the refugees’ frustration over the slow recovery and ai delivery process. However, there is still a chance for them to salvage and create hope to recover and surmount these seemingly impossible roadblocks.

International students are already stressed with Korean academics and life, but when they graduate and leave the comforts of KAIST for a career in Korea, will they be prepared? On September 13, KISA has created for the first ever the Mentor Forum to address this concern. The forum was held in the Fusion Hall at the KI Building (E4) where four KAIST alumni with careers in major Korean institutions talked about their experiences. The event was headed by Faustine Devaga from the KISA Events Team, and The KAIST Herald met with her to discuss the details about this program.
