KAIST, in carrying out an extensive reshuffle to simplify organization and increase efficiency of administration, implemented the ombudsperson policy for the first time in Korea to mediate KAIST members’ opinions on any problems or difficulty. On September 9, in the appointment ceremony held at the president’s office, two professors, Sang-Yung Shin from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Hong Ku Shim from the Department of Chemistry, were appointed as the ombudspersons of KAIST.

During the first two weeks of the fall semester, the KAIST Freshman Administrative Team received applications for the 2013 Fall Coaching Program. The applications were limited to 20 KAIST freshmen, 17 Koreans and 3 foreigners. After the allocation of the coaches to the students, the program is due to run for the entire semester.

Professor Jae-Gil Lee, Assistant Professor from the Department of Knowledge Service Engineering at KAIST, won the Best Paper Award at the 7th International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM) sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). KAIST was placed 60th in the 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Universities Rankings, the highest record since QS started compiling rankings in 2004. University rankings in science and technology subjects excelled as well, placing KAIST 36th in the engineering and technology faculty ranking. KAIST has shown a significant rise in QS ranking, from the humble beginnings as 198th place in 2006 to 63rd place last year.

After months of renovation, the Academic Registrar’s Team re-opened for the 2013 fall semester. Located in the Creative Learning Building (E11), the Academic Registrar’s Team is arguably one of the busiest administrative departments in KAIST during the beginning of each semester. Professor In-Soo Suh of the Cho Chun Shik Graduate School for Green Transportation at KAIST developed the prototype Armadillo-T, a foldable micro electric vehicle. As one can infer from the name of the vehicle, it was designed after the animal armadillo. Also, it has three other significant features that make the vehicle so special: electric, micro, and foldable.

On September 11, KAIST Happy Campus Campaign was held at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Creative Learning Building (E11). Organized by the Student Life Office and Health Care Center of KAIST, the campaign was arranged to promote healthy lifestyle and outdoor activities to KAIST students, who spend most of their time indoors and are likely to neglect their health. This year was the third Happy Campus Campaign to be held in the fall semester, and a total of more than 500 students had participated in the event so far.

Professor Chin-Wan Chung from the Department of Computer Science at KAIST received the Best Paper Award at the Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD), held by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ACM SIGMOD, which is one of the most authoritative conferences in the field of computer science, was held in New York City from June 22 to 27. Professor Taek-Soo Kim’s team from Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST, in conjunction with Doctor Seungmin Hyun from the Department of Nano Mechanics at Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), discovered a revolutionary method of tensile testing of ultra-thin films on water surfaces. Titled “Tensile Testing of Ultra-thin Films on Water Surface”, this research was published online in Nature Communications on October 3.
