The series of cases involving breach of personal information over the past few years has caused much concern and anger. This can be traced back to as early as 2008, during which the Korea’s top online auction site Auction had a massive personal data breach of approximately 10 million people, which accounts for 60% of its users; and GS Caltex had a data leak of more than 11 million customers. Similar cases followed in 2010: 20 million customers of Shinsegae Mall had their information security compromised; critical information, such as passwords and credit card ratings, of Hyundai Capital were stolen.

Although a single country, Ukraine is divided by contrasting views on the current crisis. The cause for such divisions within Ukraine is not simple - the divisions go back much further than the recent events. Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, Ukraine has been torn into the east and west.

Ukraine has seen its bloodiest weeks in decades. What started as peaceful protests over the Ukrainian government’s rejection of the long awaited European Union (EU) Association Agreement has led to the ousting of the pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych after riots demanding the president’s resignation broke out. In response to the sacking of their pro-Russian leader, the Russian contingent in eastern Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula broke out in contrasting protests late February. President Yanukovych is rumored to be hiding in Crimea, where Russian influence is stronger than in the main land. For much of February, thousands of Russian troops were secretly sent to bases Russia was permitted by treaty to own in Crimea. Russia’s annexation of Crimea came close to completion when the Crimeans voted to secede from Ukraine and fall into the welcoming arms of Russia.

The principal rationale of the Russian military intervention was to protect its citizens and armed forces in the Ukraine. However, Russia’s motives come under intense scrutiny since the Crimean peninsula is the staging ground for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy, and is home to a number of strategically crucial Russian military bases. Currently, the Russian military has overpowered local Ukrainian forces by seizing complete control of the Crimean peninsula. Western nations generally view the intervention as a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, since it is not mandated by the United Nations (UN) Security Council, nor does Russia have any credible humanitarian rationale to deploy its forces to foreign soil.
